Selcourt Methodist donates R10k to Cansa

Selcourt Trinity Methodist Church, the only official Cansa Shavathon organiser in Springs, hosted the fundraising event on Sunday.

Organiser Beth Adamson says she is not sure if the weather was to blame for the lower turnout, but they still raised about R10 000 on Sunday.

“I am pleased with the amount as it is more than what we collected for Cansa in 2016, and in the current economic climate, I believe it was a really good effort,” she says.

Rev Charlie Wernich is a familiar sight with his long, dark ponytail, which he cuts off every second year for Cansa.

Anthony Bush (49, left) says he doesn’t have a lot of hair, but “every hair counts”. Frith Cooper (51) is shaving Anthony’s head.

“He only cuts his ponytail if we meet the target of R20 000, which we did in 2015, but not this year,” says Beth.

The reverend has been supporting the Cansa Shavathon since he left school.

The shaven hair and ponytails are donated to Cansa.

Grace de Gouveia (42, left) uses different colours to spray Margie Botha’s (85) hair at the Shavathon held at the Selcourt Methodist Church on Sunday.

“Ponytails are used to make wigs for cancer sufferers and it is believed that Cansa also uses the hair shavings for oil spills and to make hair mats,” she says.

The church will definitely host the event again next year, giving Charlie another year to grow his hair.

Eva Barnard (56) chose to support the Cansa Shavathon hosted by the Selcourt Methodist Church on Sunday.

Shavathon supporter Elvine Tait not only sprayed her hair in different colours, but also convinced Grace de Gouveia to have a silver butterfly sprayed onto hers.

Collecting the money for the spray, Margie Botha decided to join Elvine and Grace and had pink spray used on her hair.

Abi Naidoo (50) allows Frith Cooper (51) to shave off all his hair. “It is for a good cause,” he says.

Anthony Bush said he didn’t have much hair, but would donate it for this worthy cause.

Several others also took on the challenge of having their heads shaved or sprayed different colours.

Grace de Gouveia (42) was not keen on having the different colours in her hair, but settled for a silver butterfly and a touch of pink at the Shavathon hosted by Selcourt Trinity Methodist Church on Sunday.
