Epilepsy Week celebrated with joy

Celebrating Epilepsy Week last week, Daggafontein Epilepsy residents focused on their singing, dancing and performance skills.

And, while doing so, during the two days set aside by centre management, they had fun in the form of a drama and a Valentine’s Ball.

Centre manager Audrey Mtimkulu says the drama was performed by a few residents on the subject they all know best, epilepsy.

“These non-actors lived for the moment when they explained to their fellow epileptic audience – through their stage performance on Tuesday – that they are capable of doing most of the things ‘normal’ people do,” says Mtimkulu.

According to Mtimkulu there is a lack of knowledge about the causes of epilepsy and people need to be educated accordingly.

On Wednesday there was a dance competition, which most of the residents competed in.

Mtimkulu says the dance competition was particularly challenging for the residents, but it was held to stimulate those who tend to spend a lot of time sitting around and becoming inactive.

“Epilepsy is often associated with negative attitudes and beliefs in the community and we need to overcome these deep-rooted traditions and misconceptions,” she says.

Although dealing with epilepsy has always been an uphill battle, the residents believe the key to overcoming the stigma of the condition lies in raising awareness within the community.

“Being active stimulates their sensory and memory skills,” she says.

She explains that the stigma that surrounds epilepsy is often more difficult to overcome than the seizures themselves.

Mtimkulu believes that, without a strong voice, epilepsy will continue to be neglected and stigmatised, notwithstanding the reality that so many patients are severely impacted by the condition.

She says, however, “The two days set aside for the celebrations were most enjoyable, not only for the staff working at the centre, but for every resident as well.”
