Living a healthier life

East Rand Stereo presenters Danny Painter and Herman Human kicked off 2017 with a fitness challenge to get themselves healthy and help two Springs charities.

Herman, aided by Danny’s interjections, explains how the idea came about: “We were sitting in studio on New Year’s Eve -”

“We’re resolutioners,” adds Danny.

“- and we were thinking we need a life style change -”

“- while eating pizza with a cold glass of Coke, feeling fat and sorry for ourselves -”

“- and the whole resolution thing was to find a way to keep it.

“So we thought we would pitch the idea to our station management, Hantie Janse van Vuuren, and see what she thinks about it,” says Herman.

This was the birth of a friendly competition between the two – Danny for the morning drive show and Herman for the afternoon drive show – and East Rand Stereo’s first charity drive for 2017.

In deciding the format of the challenge, they decided it would run for six months, to give them something to work towards, and each adopted a charity which will benefit from their efforts.

Herman chose Operation Snowdrop, while Danny is supporting the Springs SPCA. Both charities will receive all the money pledged to them.

The next step was to find trainers.

Danny already knew George Stander from Vitafit in Brakpan and approached him to train her.

She mentioned that they needed to find a trainer for Herman and he put them in contact with his daughter, Marelize Stander, at Planet Vision in Springs.

This has led to a father/daughter rivalry, which means means the rivalry is not only between the presenters but the trainers as well.

The two are training their presenters not only to get their students ready for the challenge, but also to beat one another.

At the end of the six months there will be a fitness test that will be set up by Marelize and George.

The presenters will be put through their paces at Hoërskool Hugenoot at the end of June or early July.

One of the main ideas is to inspire people to get up and get healthy.

“We want to inspire people to make lifestyle changes, get fit and be more active,” says Herman, adding that over six months they will be able to see a significant transformation.

Danny adds: “We want to show them that if we can do, it so can they.

“We are just like them. We want it as much as they do, we cry just like them and we hate it as much as they do.”

They say they would like to raise as much money for charity as possible. They have set themselves a target of R100 000 and are encouraging the community to support them.

The public is encouraged to choose either #teamdanny or #teamherman and pledge towards the charities of their choice.

To pledge, contact Poppie Nortje at East Rand Stereo and let her know which team you are supporting and how much you will be pledging.

She will then give you the banking details for the relevant charity, to deposit the money directly into either the Springs SPCA’s or Operation Snowdrop’s bank account.

Poppie can be reached on 083 910 0939.
