New licence test and lower speed limits on the way

New regulations are on the cards for road users, some of them to be implemented as soon as May 1.

Acting Lieutenant Colonel Kobeli Mokheseng, acting spokesman for the EMPD, says the Department of Transport is busy with the roll-out of plans for the new road rules and regulations.

“As soon as it reaches our doorstep from the department, we will enforce as per mandate,” he says.

The first regulations will prohibit bakkie drivers from transporting children on the back of the vehicle and prohibit the carrying of more than five occupants in the vehicle’s loading area.

Heavy-goods vehicles will be limited to certain speeds, depending on their weight, and will have to display the ‘100km/h limit’ sticker.

Other regulations planned for next year include:

• A new K53 driver’s licence test.

• Practical re-evaluations when renewing a licence.

Perhaps the most controversial regulation to be proposed is the 20km/h lower speed limits across the board: 100km/h instead of 120km/h and 40km/h in what are currently 60km/h zones.
