Thousands gather for Garbie race

The annual Garbie Striders 15/32km road race took place at the Springs Rugby Club on Sunday at 6am.

The race followed a two-lap circular route that snaked through Geduld, Springs Town Central, Ermelo Road, Strubenvale, Casseldale, Wit Road, Selection Park and Plantation Road.

Thousands of runners and walkers crowded the starting line as early as 5.30am, eagerly awaiting the race to start.

Before the race started, Peter Steyn, from the Springs Striders, estimated the crowd to be between 2 000 and 2 500 people.

The EMPD and other volunteers assisted in regulating the traffic and ensuring the safety of the participants as they travelled through Springs’ streets.

Chris and Marietjie Heyns from Boksburg says it was their first Garbie race and they were excited to start.

“We have been participating in various runs and walks for the past five years and we enjoy it immensely,” says Marietjie.

The couple braved the 5km race, but says they will usually walk the 10km race.

Lethabo Morapedi from KwaThema, who came in second in the 15km race, took on the race with bare feet, saying that it felt better and made running easier.

The winners are as follows for the 15km race:

In the open men’s category, Thabo Masima took first place with 50:51.

Second: Lethabo Morapedi with 52:18

Third: Dumisani Masima with 52:21

In the veteran men’s category Prince Mathumbu placed first with 61:03.

Second: Joseph Segula with 62:07

Third: Fana Motha with 64:06

In the masters men’s category, Frans Rooibaadjie was first with 63:32.

Second: Peter Jaehne with 65:17

Third: Milan Daniz with 71:32

The women winners are as follow for the 15km race:

In the open category, Nomsa Cossa placed first with 66:26.

Second: Caroline Koll with 66:37

Third: Marilise Vermaak with 68:06

In the veterans category Marilise Vermaak was number one with 68:06.

Second: Veliswa Dunjwa with 68:33

Third: Kerry-Ann Scrase with 73:00

The masters category saw Rita van Wyk win with 78:59.

Second: Mariet Geyer with 80:04

Third: Lynne Semple with 89:17.

The men’s winners for the 32km race are as follow:

Vusi Malobolo took first place in the open category with 1:53:16.

Second: Pule Tjaoane with 1:53:47

Third: Nkosi Skosana with 1:54:03

In the veterans category, Nteleng Mosime placed first with 1:58:53.

Second: Thomas Mkansi with 2:06:34

Third: Darryl Laybourn with 2:18:24

George Mooi took first place in masters with 2:05:37.

Second: Johan van Staden with 2:28:24

Third: Mike Forshaw with 2:35:33

The women’s winners for the 32km race are:

Tshifhiwa Malobola in the open category with 2:13:34.

Second: Yolande Maclean with 2:14:31

Third: Salome Cooper with 2:20:19

In the veterans category, Salome placed first

Second: Lis Fernandez with 2:38:06

Third: Comfort Selebi with 2:54:41

Chris Walter placed first in the masters category with 2:46:16.

Second: Almarie Rothman with 2:55:44

Third: Ansa Strydom with 2:56:14
