Samaritan reaches out to soccer players

Donald Sekgobela and his family donated school uniforms and shoes to almost 50 children at Skoonplaas Informal Settlement on Saturday.

He says these children “deserve to be dressed properly when they attend school and we always help where the need is the most”.

The project started seven years ago when he bought a pair of shoes for an underprivileged school boy who had no shoes.

“The teachers told me how intelligent this boy was and he was always present,” says Donald.

What started off as buying one pair of school shoes is now an ongoing project which is part of his annual birthday celebrations.

He says it is his way of giving back to the community.

“God has been good to me, that is why I help the community, not only through soccer, but also by providing school clothes,” says Donald.

His dream is to give children hope and he believes that by giving school uniforms he does exactly that.

Donald started the Martial Eagles Academy to get the boys involved in soccer to help them move forward in life.

He believes children should be active when they go home after school so that they don’t get bored.

“My birthday is not complete if I haven’t given back to the development of the community,” he says.

The soccer games played on Saturday are part of his way of giving back.

After the uniforms and school shoes were handed out, the Sekgobela family ensured that each child was given something to eat and drink before they departed to their homes.

“Wherever we play soccer, if I see a child eager to perform well, I ask for background information on the child and always make sure that child gets school shoes and school clothes,” he says.

Children in Tsakane and Daveyton have benefitted from this Samaritan.
