GDE assures parents placement will be made

The Gauteng Department of Education has reduced the waiting list of placement for learners by 18 000 in two days.

As was widely reported, 58 000 learners had not yet been placed. But as of Tuesday, 18 000 more learners had been placed, reducing the total number of unplaced learners to 40 000.

The department is working hard to place all learners and assures parents that all their children will be placed in a Gauteng school.

The delay in completing placement can be attributed to the following reasons:

• Gauteng faces a shortage of schools and is facing rising demand for placement, hence many parents who applied early could not be placed.

• Parents applied late, after the deadline of June 1.

• Schools could not update the system due to the December holidays.

However, the department adds that the majority of parents who used the online system have had their children placed.

Parents are urged to accept offers of placement in the proposed schools.

Districts have set up operational centres in various schools across Gauteng to assist parents with placement.

Over the past two days, the department has been inundated with requests from parents applying for placement for the first time.

While all effort will be made to place all learners, priority will be accorded to those who utilised the online system.

“We extend our deepest and sincere apology to parents for the frustration caused by the delay in placement, especially those parents who applied early,” states the department.
