Epilepsy residents are treated to Christmas lunch

The residents of the Epilepsy centre in Geduld were treated to a Christmas lunch last Sunday.

Dr Kim Naidoo has been helping and giving crucial dental care to the epilepsy residents for a number of years.

Charge sister Magda Smith says the good doctor helps the residents at his own cost and gets nothing out of it.

“He organised this lunch for our residents out of the goodness of his heart,” she says.

Naidoo says he believes there is a reason he became involved with the centre.

“Anybody deserves to be helped, especially people who have a disability, no matter how slight it is, all of them are deserving people” he says.

“These residents here do not have a home to go to. They live here at the centre in dreary and shabby conditions which are due to financial constraints.

“I know how hard the staff of the centre work to care for their people, but there is only so much they can do.”

There have been various instances where epilepsy sufferers have swallowed their dentures.

“Most dentures contain metal and when these residents have a stroke, they can swallow their dentures which cut their throats.

“I made a new denture for epileptic patients and have sent it off to Epilepsy UK. I should get feedback in a couple of days.”

Naidoo adds that he is also speaking to Epilepsy UK for financial assistance to set up a dental unit for the residents of Epilepsy Geduld.

“These people have got nothing.”

Naidoo proudly adds that they even had a DJ, Kesevan Pillay, who entertained the residents and offered his services completely free of charge.

“Various sponsors came on board for this function and it just goes to show you that in this poverty-stricken community that is Springs, many people are willing to open their hearts to do good,” says Naidoo.

Smith says one of the biggest problems they have at the centre is dentistry.

“We cannot express our gratitude to Dr Naidoo enough for everything he does for us.”
