WATCH: Caylum is recovering well after operation

Caylum Willemse's posterior tracheomalacia operation, performed at the Boston Children's Hospital in the United States of America, went well.

The operation was done by Dr Russell Jennings, the director of the oesophageal and airway treatment centre at the hospital, on Friday.

As part of the nine hours and 30 minutes operation, Jennings explained to Caylum’s parents that he had to remove scar tissue and also did a broncheo scope, before the actual operation.

Wayne Willemse (25), Caylum’s father, says the staff were wonderful and updated them regularly on the progress of the operation.

He says the procedure went well and the doctor is happy with Caylum’s progress.

“The fact that Caylum pulled out the ventilator and started breathing, is a miracle,” claims Wayne.

A hungry and uncomfortable Caylum had the doctors try different medication to calm him and to relieve his shortness of breath, on Saturday.

“So far the medicine is helping,” says Wayne.

Caylum wasn’t allowed to have any fluids since Thursday and had his first bottle on Saturday evening.

He has a long cut on his back and is on strong medication, but this brave little boy still gives a happy smile to his parents when they talk to him.

Wayne says they hope to be back in South Africa to spend Christmas with Charlotte, their nine-year-old daughter, but only time will tell.
