Video: Dr Jennings prepare Caylum for his operation in Boston Children’s Hospital
Caylum Willemse (10 months old) was admitted to the intensive care unit at the Boston Children's Hospital in Boston, United States of America, on Monday evening.
Wayne Willemse, Caylum’s father, confirmed everything is going well considering the long flight.
“Caylum will go for a CAT scan today (Tuesday) and will be operated on on Friday,” he says.
This is a computed tomography (CT) scan, where X-rays are used to make detailed pictures of parts of the body; and the structures inside the body.

The family left for Boston on Sunday and arrived at New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport, on Monday evening.
They met with Dr Russell Jennings, the director of the oesophageal and airway treatment centre at the hospital, who’ll perform the posterior tracheomalacia procedure on Caylum.
The operation is estimated to take between eight to 18 hours.
Wayne says they’re all in good spirits.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Caylum couldn’t fly to Boston on November 9.

Caylum, who was born on January 22, was diagnosed with tracheo-oesophageal fistula (TOF) and oesophageal atresia (OA) by Dr Charles Caraphinha – and was later diagnosed with tracheobronchomalacia.
