Culpable homicide investigation underway after cyclist’s death

A man believed to be in his mid-30s has been hit by a truck driven by an employee of a non-alcoholic beverage company.

The incident occurred on Friday on the Tonk Meter Road around 7.15am.

According to police spokesman Sgt Harry Manaka, the truck driver was coming from the Nigel plant heading to Springs for a delivery while it is believed that the deceased was coming from KwaThema.

“The deceased, who was riding a bicycle, allegedly tried to cross the busy road during peak-hour traffic when he got hit.

“It is, however, unclear at this stage whether the driver and the deceased saw each other,” he says.

The man was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

“The driver has been given a warning while police are still investigating a case a culpable homicide.

“We urge cyclists to only cross the road where and when it is safe to do so.

“Further, we plead with motorists to ensure that they adhere to the speed limit and to be vigilant of pedestrians and cyclists at all times,” says Manaka.
