Shots fired after ATM bombed, one dies

An ATM was bombed in the early hours of Saturday morning at 2.20am in Nigel Road, Selcourt.

A ProSafe security officer responded to the scene when the employees at the filling station across the road from the ATM pressed the panic button.

According to Liaan Horton, general manager of ProSafe Security, the officer was shot at multiple times by the robbers while he was in the response vehicle.

The officer attempted to drive himself to the hospital but lost consciousness en route due to a gunshot wound in his upper leg and he crashed into a tree.

The officer was operated on on Sunday and remains stable.

Captain Johannes Ramphora, spokesman for the Springs Police, says several AK47 and 9mm cartridges were found at the scene.

A male in a Fiat who was driving past was shot in the head by a stray bullet.

The victim was taken to Tambo Memorial Hospital. He was initially in a coma but later died on Monday.

“A blue Toyota Corolla was left at the scene and possibly belonged to the suspects,” says Ramphora.

A women, who stopped at the filling station to buy water, was warned of the danger and told to leave, but four males wearing balaclavas approached her vehicle and ordered her to get out of the vehicle or they would kill her.

The robbers drove off in the vehicle, which was later recovered in KwaThema.

An investigation is underway. No arrests have been made.

Mfundo Tshabalala, a car guard who slept in the vicinity, says he saw the events unfold in front of him.

“I was sleeping across the road when I heard the explosion,” he says.

Tshabalala says he feared for his life when the robbers started shooting.

“I was very scared and couldn’t believe what I saw.”
