‘Springs Monster’ child abuse trial continues

Springs monster and his wife due back in court.

The trial of the man, dubbed the Springs Monster, is expected to continue in the North Gauteng High Court on Monday.

The Springs businessman denied guilt on charges of attempting to murder his 11-year-old son – and abusing and neglecting his five children – after being arrested at his Springs home on May 23, 2014.

He is facing 22 charges including rape and abuse, and possession and dealing in drugs.

He entered a guilty plea to only one of the charges – interfering with a police officer while he was on duty during an investigation.

His wife, who faces many of the same charges as her husband, pleaded not guilty to the 20 of the charges against her.

The couple’s trial started on May 23 and, after two weeks of testimony before Judge Eben Jordaan, was postponed to next week.

During this time various people, including the couple’s two oldest children, were called upon to testify.

The testimony of Col Johan Alberts of the Germiston explosives unit reduced the man to tears when he gave evidence about the fireworks to which nails had been attached, that were found at this home in Springs.

The man, who attempted to commit suicide with a prison-issue razor blade shortly after his arrest, remained in custody at Modderbee prison.

His wife’s bail of R2 000 was extended.
