Community members take law into their own hands

A suspect was arrested in Gugulethu Informal Settlement for the possession of stolen goods shortly after he was discharged from a nearby hospital on Monday.

This comes after he was allegedly involved in a house robbery on the corner of Second Street and Seventh Avenue, Bakerton last Wednesday.

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says the owner of the house followed up on information he received from the community and visited the suspect at his house in Gugulethu.

The community members reportedly got involved and assaulted the man before they called the police.

“He was quite badly beaten up and was treated by paramedics on the scene, who took the injured suspect to a nearby hospital for treatment,” says Ramphora.

The police went to the suspect’s house and found the suspect in possession of the stolen goods he allegedly took during the house robbery.

According to the 30-year-old owner of the house, three suspects stormed into his bedroom last Wednesday.

“Two of the suspects were armed and they assaulted the owner,” says Ramphora.

The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash, an amplifier with two speakers, a DVD player, radio, cellphone and two plugs before they left the scene on foot.
