WATCH & LISTEN: ‘Fight like a girl’ key rings for breast cancer
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Cathy Olckers and her husband, Gunther, took it upon themselves to come up with a different way of raising awareness and donations.
Handmade with love — Cathy and Gunther made creative wooden key rings, specifically aimed at women and breast cancer.
“We didn’t want to make just the usual ribbons that are associated with cancer, we wanted this to stand out,” says Cathy.
There are three key rings made for the cancer awareness, one is the more standard pink ribbon, but it is the other two that divides them from the ordinary and have women (and men) giggling and buying.

One creatively reads “Fight like a girl”, the emphasis placed on girl with a cancer ribbon.
The other, more popular one of the three reads “Boobies”, the two “os’ replaced by ribbons, to emphasize breast cancer awareness.
“I came up with ‘Boobies’, while Gunther came up with ‘Fight like a girl’,” says Cathy.
Cathy adds that these have been flying from her supply since she posted it on Facebook.
“People love the unique idea of these key rings, it’s not just another ribbon.”

While breast cancer is nothing to laugh at, these key rings put a slight sense of humour and cast some light into the seriousness of breast cancer.
R5 of every key ring sold by Cathy and Gunther is donated to the Rotary Club of Springs of which proceeds will go to Reach for Recovery, Pink Trees for Pauline and Rotary projects.
Siobheanne Landsberg, president of the Rotary Club of Springs, says they are very flattered that Cathy and Gunther have decided to help them with donations.
“We are honoured that she has chosen us and taken up this initiative,” says Siobheanne.
“It’s a very good product and it’s all going for a good cause, we are happy to be associated with her.”
