Welgedacht Road plunged into darkness

About 15 lamp posts have been vandalised in Welgedacht Road between Gugulethu and Everest informal settlements and Slovo Park.

Ward councillor Ramesh Sheodin says it appears that the lamp posts at being vandalised by people who are stealing the electric cables and the street lamps.

He says the Ekurhuleni Metro and the police continuously have to remove illegal connections from the street lights near the set of robots in Welgedacht Road to shacks in the informal settlements.

“It is sad and unacceptable that thieves are destroying municipal property, considering the inconvenience that it is causing drivers at night,” says Sheodin.

The vandalism has plunged the area into darkness only a few months after metro contractors replaced the cables and the street lamps and bulbs (Welgedacht Road will be lit up).

Sheodin says he is receiving complaints on a daily basis from residents using the road at night.

“I can only request the metro to replace the lamp posts with concrete poles like the ones in Nigel Road.

Metro spokesman Themba Gadebe says they plan to remove the vandalised lamp posts.

“This is a case of vandalism,” he says, adding “the lamp posts will be replaced.”
