Exciting plans for Frikkie Deysel Park

Two local businessmen, Ettiene Fourie and Leroy Geyer, are planning to upgrade the Frikkie Deysel Park in Geduld Extension.

The park is situated on the corner of Sarel Cilliers Street and McClean Road, opposite Rus ‘n Bietjie Old Age Home and next to the sports grounds of HoĂ«rskool Hugenote.

Fourie and Geyer recently handed over a proposal to the metro’s parks department, for approval for the upgrading of the park.

Their plan is to clean up the grounds, starting with the dam in Sarel Cilliers Street.

“We would like the metro’s assistance in removing the reeds in the dam and to clean it up, to install an electrical point and to close the park with a Clear-Vu fence,” says Fourie.

The duo would like to adopt the park and to transform it into a wildlife sanctuary, where people can visit over weekends.

“There are families who have never seen a small buck, not to mention exotic ducks, except for maybe on TV,” Fourie adds.

People visit other provinces or towns to enjoy a wildlife experience, and these two businessmen want to bring that experience to the doorstep of all Springs residents.

“Currently, there is quite a large bird population, which needs to be protected,” he says.

And this is exactly what they are planning to do, protecting the current bird population and adding exotic ducks and small game to the park as well as full-time security once the project is completed.

Both Fourie and Geyer foresee the park being changed into a wildlife park that they will maintain.

Geyer says once they have the cooperation of the metro and the park is up and running, they would like to work closely with schools, to teach children about the importance and habitat of wildlife.

”The park will be beneficial and educational to students and the public visiting on weekends,” he explains.

The duo has a passion for wildlife and claim they have a lot of experience in the field.

Questions were sent to the metro, but no comment had been received at the time of publishing.
