Neighbours’ battle with blocked drains

Selection Park resident Cornelia Kruger (39) recently reported an ongoing sewage leak in Pridgeon Street to the metro.

Raw sewage was streaming from a manhole in front of her property on the sidewalk for the second time in two weeks, causing human faeces to push up from all the drains on her property.

The first leak was fixed within two days after being reported and metro workers cleaned up the mess afterwards.

However, this time they didn’t clean up the overflowing manhole on Friday.

“When I arrived at home on Thursday I was surprised to see the same manhole overflowing again,” she says.

The family couldn’t even open their windows in their house or leave the back door open because the stench was unbearable.

To top it all up her neighbours have been reporting a sewage leak in their backyard, seeping through the concrete walling into Kruger’s backyard.

This also seeps through the concrete wall into Kruger’s property.

Bossie Bosman (64) says they have reported the drain on July 21 to the metro’s call centre and were given a reference number.

However, when he phoned again on July 28, he was given the same reference number but was told their records showed the manhole had been fixed.

They have phoned to report the problem several times in August and were given several reference numbers, yet no one from the metro ever arrived to fix the problem.

“The smell is unbearable and we don’t know what do do any more,” says Bosman.

He believes the overflowing manhole problem in front of Kruger’s house is linked to the overflowing drain in their backyard.

“For nearly two months we have been living with the stench and received no help from the metro,” he says.

No comment was received from the metro at the time of publishing.
