Local singer visits cancer patient in Superhero outfit

Springs-born musician Sharoney Viljoen (20) and a few artists visited Ruben Scharneck, a six-year-old Pretoria boy with cancer, in superhero outfits.

Ruben was diagnosed with metastatic neuroblastoma, a cancer that attacks the central nervous system.

Sharoney was introduced to Ruben by a friend, Marulaboom, during a fundraising event in aid of Ruben in 2015.

When Marulaboom approached Sharoney she agreed without hesitation.

Children and their welfare is something that has always touched her heart.

“When I saw Ruben the first time, a friendship developed between us that has grown into a deep-rooted relationship,” says Sharoney.

When Marulaboom contacted Sharoney for the second time, for a recording of singer Jay’s song ‘Superhero’, she again agreed to be part of the project.

“The song means a lot to Ruben, who never complains about anything.

“Sometimes I can see he is really tired and doesn’t feel well, but he is still a normal, brave boy,” she says.

She was very emotional on the day of the recording due to the fragile and small boy’s presence.

“I wish I could take away his illness and protect him from the pain,” she says.

Sharoney, Marulaboom, Jakkie Louw, Pieter Smith and other musicians were all dressed up as superheroes when they visited Ruben.

Sharoney didn’t mind dressing up as she feels Ruben is part of her family.

“Ruben and his family are as precious as my own family,” she says.

She says the song will be available on iTunes soon and the proceeds will go towards #Hope4Ruben.
