WATCH: 67 minutes worth spending at bakery

Netcare N17 Hospital donated much-needed groceries to the Fresh Bake Bakery at the Far East Rand Hospital (FERH) on Mandela Day.

According to Jacobé Botha, head of the social workers department, the bakery is a skills development project to empower women and children to take care of themselves.

“We train children from Felicitas School in Brakpan and women in the community to be self sustainable,” she says.

For the bakery manager, Lehlohonolo Mashiyane, the groceries donation was godsend.

“The groceries given will go a long way and will enable us to train these women and children free of charge,” he says.

When Leana Haywood, N17 Hospital client liaison officer, chose the bakery they never realised how much their donation would contribute not just to the bakery but also to make a difference in people’s lives.

“We bought the groceries according to the list received from Jacobé, but I decided to add a few things to the list,” says Leana.

She also gave them aprons, oven mittens, a kitchen wall clock and something pretty to hang on the walls.

“We will also buy Dutch lace for the windows soon to brighten up the windows in the bakery,” she says.

Hospital manager Andries Joubert, the human resource manager, Buyi Dlamini, and pharmacy manager Priya Maicker were impressed with what Lehlohonolo showed them.

Priya says she loves baking and is willing to share a few recipes with Lehlohonolo.

“It was 67 minutes worth spending,” says Andries.
