Sewage bath in resident’s yard

Iphigenia Gavanos (64) of Strubenvale has been sitting with a pool of leaked sewage water all around her yard.

She also says this is not the first occurrence and the issue hasn’t been resolved.

She adds that last year she sat with the same situation for three weeks.

“This happened three times last year alone and now it’s happening again,” says Iphigenia.

Iphigenia says when she faced the same problem last year, the water streamed across the road to her neighbour’s home.

“That was worse than what we are faced with now,” she says.

“During the day the sewage water levels in my yard rise and during the night they subside.”

The yard, which smells of sewage and is submerged in water in some parts, has become a health hazard for Iphigenia and her tenant, Eve van der Walt (70).

“I can’t even use the toilet because the pipes are blocked and that causes an even bigger overflow of sewage water,” says Eve.

“We simply cannot live like this.”

Iphigenia says she suspects that the problem emanates from the three blocked manholes in the veld situated across the road from her home.

“This is a very big problem and the veld across the road is also experiencing a blockage and overflow of sewage water,” says Iphigenia.

Iphigenia says she has reported the matter numerous times but is yet to see a permanent solution.

“I also called this morning again and I was told that there is no record of numerous complaints from me,” she adds.

“That is not true.”

“The other time, I called one of the officials directly and he said he was too busy to come out.”

Questions have been sent to the metro for comment.
