Marli loves to sing

Ex-Hoƫrskool Hugenote pupil Marli Neuhoff (22) is a fifth year medical student at the University of Pretoria, and loves being part of the university's The Royal Madness acapella group.

Acapella music is group or solo singing without instrumental accompaniment.

“I was approached by a member of the group who asked me to audition for them in September 2014, and the rest is history,” says Marli.

The group consists of eight members, four men and four women.

This Petersfield resident’s love for singing started at a very young age and she has been part of school choirs and competitions.

She was part of her residence’s Serenade Group who won the university serenade competition for three years and also won the National Acapella Championship in her third year.

Her primary goal is to use the gifts she has been given to the best of her ability.

At the moment the group focuses on getting as much exposure and opportunities in the environment they are in.

“Our goal is to expand our set list of songs to a vast range including as many genres as possible,” she says.

They plan to perform as much as possible and eventually would like to perform at bigger events as well as releasing more music videos and to seek opportunities where their musical abilities will be appreciated and enjoyed.

She had to make a number of sacrifices to be part of the group, including time with her friends and time behind the books.

“I am privileged to have a wonderful, supportive family,” she says.

Her biggest fans are her family and Kobus Eloff, her boyfriend.

She would love to continue to be part of the group as long as her career will allow it.

“I have also learnt to use the time I have available for studying more effectively,” she says.
