Avonique (6) cares for other primary school learners

Six-year-old school girl reach out to needy.

Miss Petite South Africa Gauteng, Avonique van Rooyen (6), chose to start her charity work at Laerskool Selectionpark.

Caring enough for underprivileged children, this Grade One learner donated shoes and school clothes to them.

When she was recently crowned as Miss Petite South Africa Gauteng, she knew charity work is part of this title.

After a Boksburg optometrist donated two pairs of designer sunglasses to her, she decided to use the opportunity to sell tickets to her advantage.

She sold tickets for the one pair of glasses to raise money to be used for a good cause.

“When I received the money I bought the clothes and the shoes,” she says.

She is quite impressed with the support from the community.

The second pair of sunglasses is still available and the draw will take place at the end of June.

Along with this project, she also collected secondhand winter clothes, which she handed over to the school.

Avonique’s mother, Tihani van Rooyen, says her daughter’s donation came in handy as the school also holds their Omgee Maand project in June, when they reach out to underprivileged children in the school.

André du Plessis, the school principal, who received the clothes and shoes, says the school is grateful for Avonique’s contribution.

“Thank you for caring,” he adds.
