Burst pipe floods 11th Avenue

A flood of water outside Walwyn Court is close to running down the whole of 11th Avenue in Springs.

This is the concern of the court’s two caretakers, Dave (56) and Cornelia (63) Sklar.

“We initially had a leaking pipe outside our premises, by the gate,” says Dave.

“We then reported it to the Ekurhuleni Metro who came to fix it, but not up to par because we had to call them again to fix the now burst pipe.”

“When they returned to fix the burst pipe they went inside the yard to dig up the connecting pipe, for whatever reason, they dug up the ground to reach the pipe and that process caused a water leakage from inside.”

It has been two weeks since the Sklars reported the incident of the second burst pipe, and they report they have received no assistance.

“I have had to take measures to cover the water and dug-up holes so that we can walk around the yard,” says Dave.

Cornelia called the metro again on Monday and received a second reference number.

“All we keep getting told is that they will send people to come fix it, but when will that be?” asks Cornelia.

The Sklars say that it is difficult for them to take the refuse bins of all the residents in and out of the yard because of the stream of water as well as the hole of water outside the gate.

“I can’t even drive my delivery vehicle into the yard because of the hole and water at the gate,” says Dave.

“I have to park my car at the car dealership next door.”

The caretakers are also concerned about the elderly people who could slip and get injured as a result of the leak, on top of the wasted water expenses incurred.

“In a country where there are concerns of water shortages, the metro is taking this issue too lightly,” says Dave. “In the end it will be the taxpayers’ problem.”

Questions have been sent to the metro for feedback.
