General receives memorandum from Gugulethu and Everest residents

Approximately 1 000 residents of Gugulethu and Everest informal settlements were in a peaceful march from 10am along Welgedacht Road to the Springs Police Station today (June 3).

Resident of Langaville Bongani Mfobela says the community is fed up with crime in their area.

The community signed a petition to voice their concerns on crime and alleged rape of women in front of their husbands.

Mfobela says the community recently decided to inform the police that they will be marching to the police station to hand over the petition attached to a memorandum containing their grievances.

They invited one of the following people to received the petition, the minister of police, Nkosinathi Nhleko, the MMC Vivian Chauke and the MEC for Gauteng Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane.

Mfobela says the community wasn’t happy that neither of the three arrived to receive the grievances.

Salang Mosaka, senior magistrate Springs Court, received the memorandum and addressed the crowd.

“I will only respond to the bail and court proceedings query as the rest of the complaints on the memorandum should be addressed by the Springs police,” she says. The community leaders will meat with Mosaka on June 10 to discuss the query.

The Ekurhuleni East cluster commander Genl Gerly Mbele arrived at 11.15am to receive the memorandum and addressed the crowd.

She informed them that the memorandum will be discussed and handed over to Nhleko, the minister of police.

The police, SAPS Swot team, Public Order Policing, EMPD and EMPD K9 Dog Unit members were deployed to assist with the march.

Brig Thenduka Gwebushe, Springs station commander was also present at the time.

Ward 72 councillor, Ramesh Sheodin says it was a peaceful march.

“It is our constitutional right to protest as long as it is done in a peaceful manner,” he says.

Sheodin says he understands the communitie’s dissatisfaction and hopes a solution to their problem will be found soon.

The police dispersed the crowd who peacefully returned to the informal settlement.
