Casseldale’s dark hole

A mahole which is approximately 3m deep is causing safety concerns to Casseldale resident and member of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) Shaun Pulvenis (35).

Shaun, who is in charge of security and safety in the CPF, has had the open manhole outside his residence, on the corner of Van Graan and Victoria roads, for the past six months.

The hole is a direct entrance to the drains underground.

“This is a pressing issue that cannot be left unattended,” says Shaun.

He, along with the CPF, has put the complaint through to the metro, which has provided no response or taken any measures to fix the hole.

“I am the one who makes sure that I put barricade tapes and poles around the hole, so that residents and pedestrians are aware of it, but someone keeps moving them,” he says.

The ground around the opening of the hole is said to be loosening as it rains and the ground becomes softer, which is resulting in the expansion of the hole’s opening.

“If someone steps on this piece of ground by mistake, they will completely lose the ground here and fall in,” says Shaun.

The hole is, however, already big enough for a small child to fall into and potentially be hurt.

“Every day, we have children walking past here from the surrounding primary schools, so the bigger concern is that one of them will fall into the hole and we won’t be able to see that he or she has fallen.

This is a death trap.”

We have sent questions to the metro regarding the matter and are awaiting feedback.
