Springs’ ‘Monster Couple’ trial starts in North Gauteng High Court

The trial of the father, dubbed the Springs Monster, and his wife, accused of neglecting their five children and keeping them hostage for years, started in the North Gauteng High Court today (May 23).

The man (whose name is being withheld to protect the minor children) pleaded guilty to one of the 22 charges against him – interfering with a police officer while he was on duty during an investigation.

His 36-year-old wife pleaded not guilty to 20 all of the charges against her.

The couple is charged with the same 22 charges including rape, abuse, possession and dealing in drugs.

The trial is currently underway and our journalist is working on the story.

More details will follow as they become available.

The two appeared before Judge Selby Baqwa on December 4, who postponed the case.

The 36-year-old father, who was sent to the Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital for observation to determine his mental state, was found fit to stand trial on November 27.

His 35-year-old wife was arrested a month later and her bail of R2 000 was extended.

The used car salesman and his wife are facing charges of child abuse, attempted murder, rape, assault and defeating the ends of justice.

The man was arrested in May 2014 after his son fled from the family’s home in Springs and ran to a neighbour’s house to beg for help.

The neighbours then called the police.
