EMPD confiscate R5-m worth of illegal airtime

Members of EMPD Tracing Unit and EMPD Public Order Policing arrested three men for the illegal manufacture of airtime worth R5-million in Bakerton on Monday morning (May 16).

The EMPD members raided a business at 9am, in First Street, Bakerton and confiscated airtime and machines used in the manufacturing of the airtime.

“After the arrest, the three suspects admitted to being involved in the illegal manufacturing of airtime,” says Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesman.

He adds the trio also admitted to having initially started their illegal business in Johannesburg before moving to Springs.

The three suspects, aged 23, 24 and 26 years, were charged with fraud and taken to the Springs Police Station.

In-depth investigations are under way to find out whether the airtime produced works or not.

Network operators whose airtime was found among the illegally produced coupons will be notified.

Springs police spokesman, Capt Johannes Ramphora, confirms a case of fraud was opened and that the suspects were detained at the police cells.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court.
