New Baskie

Mom bought me a new baskie.

My previous one had gotten just plain grungy.

The cushion was all lumpy and had long since been replaced with a big pillow and the bottom was falling out.

We can’t really understand why they always make the bottom of baskets with that silly net-like stuff that always tears and breaks.

Especially if your baskie gets moved around every day.

Mom puts my baskie out on the stoep – she says otherwise it starts to smell like a wet chicken.

Personally I think that’s just rude.

Then again I do like to have a nap on the stoep in the sun sometimes and it is much more comfy to do this in my basket instead of on the hard tiles.

You’re probably thinking I’m a bit weird napping in my basket in the sun – when I get hot in the middle of the night and have to lie on the cool tiles.

It’s okay.

You can think that.

I don’t always understand it myself.

She’d been gone for hours and hours and Em had long since snuck me the last carrot.

I heard the car pull up next to the front door.

Mom came in and plonked something down on the floor.

Here you go Fudges – a spiffy new baskie for you.

Sniffed it. Looked at her and then eyed out the bags.

Did you get more carrots then?

Ooops – said mom. No carrots – I forgot.

But how about you test out your new baskie then?

No carrots! My woggeldy whiskers.

How could you forget the carrots?

What am I going to have for a treat now?

I’ll give you a bit of ham instead – and she walked off to the kitchen. I followed.

Ham is acceptable but it’s not quite the same as a nice crunchy carrot.

She picked up my new basket and walked upstairs. I followed. When I finally got all the way to the top she was already sitting at her desk working. I rolled my eyes towards the bed.

You going to help me up then?

No Fudges – she sighed – you are jolly well going to get into your new baskie and test it out first.

Sheesh…alright already! Climbed into that basket.

Hmmmm…. not too shabby.

Nice and soft and cuddly.

More space too.

Climbed out and gave her a slobber.

Thanks mom – now put me on the bed please.
