No help for families without water

Welgedacht residents had to go without any water for three consecutive days.

On Thursday morning metro workers were digging a hole next to Welgedacht Road, at the Blesbokspruit’s entrance.

One of the metro workers suspects that the contractors may have damaged the main pipeline while installing the pipeline between Bakerton and Persida.

The metro worker alleges that the major leak was caused by a possible crack in the pipe which, over time, became worse due to the water pressure.

Residents were without water from Thursday morning to Saturday evening and had to find a solution.

Leana Haywood says they are lucky to have family in Casseldale where they could at least have a bath every day and fetch water in 20-litre containers, which they had to use sparingly.

She felt sorry for the other residents who did not have family close by who could supply them with water to get them through the three days.

“It was time consuming to get everything ready after work to drive to Casseldale, have a bath, fill the containers and drive back, adding at least one hour and 30 minutes away from home and then still get back to prepare supper for the family.”

It was basic food that the Haywood family cooked to try and save enough water to wash the dishes, flush the toilet and to be able to brush their teeth the next morning before work, not to mention that they had to make sure their dogs also had enough drinking water during the day.

The Addie has sent a query to the metro and has contacted Themba Gadebe, the metro spokesman, for comment.

He says he will look into the matter.
