Stadium turns into storage facility

Approximately 20 EMPD, Ekurhuleni Metro and other unmarked wrecked vehicles are currently being stored at the PAM Brink Stadium in Geduld.

Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesman, says the vehicles are stored at the stadium due to the shortage of storage space.

The space at the stadium was identified by the metro’s Assets Management Unit as a possible option for storage and auctioneering due to its close proximity to the Springs disposal yard, which is currently filled to capacity.

The Fleet Department then engaged with the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture (SRAC), which confirmed that space was available as there were no immediate plans for the facility.

“A security and risk assessment was conducted and subsequently an MOU between the Fleet Department and SRAC was signed,” says Kgasago.

When a metro vehicle is involved in an accident it is towed to the nearest council workshop or a storage yard where an insurance assessor will come and assess the vehicle.

“All our vehicles are insured,” says Kgasago.

If the vehicle can still be repaired it will be taken to the panel-beating workshop but if it is deemed to be damaged beyond repair it will be redeemed by the insurance company.

“The vehicles will be sold at an auction which is planned for the near future,” he says.
