Deaf and mute man traumatised

A deaf and mute man was held at gunpoint and robbed by two armed suspects in Nigel Road, Selection Park on Wednesday, last week.

Members of the Selpark CPF and the EMPD arrested two suspects within minutes after the armed robbery.

The deaf and mute man was on his way home from work at 8pm when he was approached by the two armed suspects.

EMPD officers Louis Els and Louwtjie du Toit responded to the call and when they arrived at the scene the victim explained to them that one of the two armed suspects pushed the gun against his chest.

Els says although they found it difficult to understand what the victim was saying, they realised he was trying to explain that his bag with all of its contents had been taken.

Members of the Selpark CPF managed to get a description of the two suspects from the victim and they, joined by Els and du Toit, searched the area and caught the two suspects.

One of the suspects was caught in the Selection Park area while the second suspect was arrested on the N17.

“We are not sure what happened to the firearms, as the suspects were unarmed when they were arrested, but the stolen bag was recovered,” says Els.

The two suspects were taken to the Springs Police Station where a case of armed robbery was opened.

Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, confirms an armed robbery case was opened at the police station.
