Rotary gives students the gift of light

The Rotary Club of Springs Park and a local car dealership teamed up to donate solar panel lights to matric pupils, at Springs Secondary School, on Thursday.

Jos Rokebrand (62), the president of the Rotary club, says they want to give pupils the gift of light.

The aim of the initiative is to provide pupils with the correct tools that would enable them to study more and improve their results.

“We have 5 000 lights to donate to local students who are mostly from informal settlements and who do not have electricity,” says Jos.

The team of people who have joined to make this project a success will be visiting more schools in need of assistance over the next few days.

“We will continue to visit schools until we have donated all 5 000 lights,” says Jos.

The initiative is aimed at matric learners, to assist them in their final year. The team wants them to do their best.

Hot dogs and cold drinks were also given to learners as they each received their gift bag containing the solar light and stationery.

“The tools have been handed to these students, so I just hope to see an improvement in all of their results,” says Jos.

“Light up the world” is the motto that Jos and the team are going by, while Rotary continues to donate the solar lights to underprivileged pupils at surrounding schools.

The students were briefed on how to charge their lights and told it is now their responsibility to ensure that the panel is charged when it comes to night-time studying.

“No more excuses for not being able to study,” says Jos.
