Shavathon is here

Selcourt Methodist Church will once again be taking part in the CANSA Shavathon on February 28.

Church secretary Sharon Laas is hoping for a bigger turnout this year as the church is the only venue hosting the Shavathon in Springs.

“We will be selling boerewors rolls and the proceeds will also go towards the Shavathon,” says Sharon.

The church service will continue as normal at 8.30am, after which people are invited to the parking area where there will be volunteers assisting with spraying hair a different colour, or a shave.

Colouring your hair or paying a Bail Out Fee have become options for those who prefer not to shave or who can’t shave on the day.

The Shavathon initiative is an event aimed at showing solidarity with those affected by cancer.

Chemotherapy is the cause for many cancer patients losing their hair as the chemotherapy drugs travel throughout the body to kill cancer cells, and some of these drugs damage hair follicles, causing the hair to fall out.

The hair that is collected is sent to a human-hair wig manufacturer and distributed as needed.

“It’s a wonderful cause to support and we grow every year with our donations made towards the CANSA association,” says Sharon.
