This is what people want to hear in the president’s SoNA speech

The Addie asked readers what they think are the most crucial issues in South Africa that need to be addressed by the president.

President Jacob Zuma will be delivering the State of the Nation Address (SoNA) tomorrow (Thursday).

The public will be able to view the ceremony live on various media platforms, such as radio, television and online.

Regular programming on some TV channels will be interrupted during the SoNA from 6pm until 8.30pm.

The Addie asked readers what they think are the most crucial issues in South Africa that need to be addressed by the president.

Franci Swanepoel: “Definitely the crime!”

Vincent O’Neil: “Getting rid of him and corruption.”

Susan Visser (translated from Afrikaans): “Now our soap operas are going to be postponed for a bunch of rubbish.”

Suggestions by the public for the 2015 State of the Nation Address are more or less the same that people are still complaining about today.

Some of the dominant issues are:

  • Small medium and micro enterprises development
  • education (the quality of basic education and increasing of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme budget)
  • social development (revising social grants)
  • crime and drugs (substance abuse and drug dealers)
  • corruption
  • housing
  • better salaries for police
  • teachers and mine workers
  • skills development
  • electricity or energy crisis
  • xenophobia
  • homophobia and the rise of racism
  • sustainable employment (jobs and internship opportunities)
  • protection of rhinos
  • land ownership
  • legalisation of marijuana
  • water shortages
  • health (state of public hospitals)
  • road deaths
  • e-tolls
  • littering
