Don’t fear, speak

Springs resident Jana Smit (18) completed her Competent Communicator Award at the Refined Raconteurs Toastmasters Club's bi-annual club officers training at the Impala Platinum Refineries in Rowhill held on Saturday.

This ex-Hoërskool Hugenote learner, decided to join the Toastmasters club last year.

In her speech entitled “Somewhere over the rainbow nation” she inspired the audience to choose to change.

“It is up to the citizens of South Africa to make a difference in the country’s future,” she says.

Cornelia Pleho, club president, says it is wonderful for such a young woman to achieve this award.

Every Toastmaster’s dream is to become a distinguished Toastmaster.

There are two ways in which this may be achieved:

By means of completing a leadership track or by completing a communication track course.

For both these, certain projects have to be completed and the results submitted to Toastmasters International, in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, United States of America where the head office is situated.

The leadership track includes projects such as time management, organising of events and many more.

The communication track includes speech projects, of which the first 10 projects lead to a Competent Communicator Award.

This is followed by the advanced communicator projects, which include more specialised speeches.

Cornelia says at a typical meeting, the Toastmaster of that evening would act as the master of ceremonies.

Members of the public are invited and encouraged to visit Refined Raconteurs Toastmasters Club every first and third Wednesday of the month at 5pm, at Impala Platinum Refineries HRD, corner East Geduld Road and Cowles Street, Rowhill.

“You are guaranteed to gain new skills in a supportive and experiential environment,” says Judi Smit, club vice-president.
