Tihan excels in CMaths

Tihan van Rooyen (12) recently returned from the United States of America with a bronze medal he obtained at the 15th PAMA Global Abacus and Mental Arithmetic (SEMAS) Competition 2015.

He left South Africa on December 22 and travelled to the Culture Centre of Taipei Economic Cultural Office in San Jose, California where he competed against 64 children from 14 countries including Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and the USA.

The Grade Seven learner from Laerskool Selectionpark participated in group D of the competition for children aged 12 to 14 years.

The competition involved a series of abacus math sums as well as Anzan sums (calculating without an abacus) ranging in difficulty in each age group.

Tihani van Rooyen, Tihan’s mother, says he needed to complete three question papers with 30 sums in three minutes per paper with the abacus and three question papers with 30 sums in one minute per question paper, without the help of the abacus.

He was one of the bronze medal winners in his age group.

His parents are incredibly proud of him.

“It was an unbelievable experience and I have made a lot of new friends,” he says.
