Samaritans reach out

A group of local people recently donated books and toys to the International Assemblies of God Community Library Centre, in a rural town called Ga-Makibelo, in Limpopo.

Pastor Martins Kgongoane, founder of the library, says almost 100 per cent of the project was sponsored by these 15 people.

Kgongoane mentioned what the people from Springs did to support the project at the launch in November.

The pastor believes these people were touched by God and responded positively to the article they read in a national magazine in August.

When Debbie Alcock read the article about the pastor and his plans with a library she followed a roundabout route to get hold of the pastor.

“When the pastor phoned me he stressed the needs — including books — they are dealing with to start a library in a small rural town in Limpopo,” says Debbie.

Without further delay, Debbie started phoning a few friends and within two month they collected hundreds of books and also a few toys.

“The generosity of the people I phoned didn’t come as a surprise,” she says.

Besides toys and books, there were also clothes, golf clubs and a bag of golf balls.

Debbie informed the pastor of their donation and he organised a vehicle to collect the donation from her house.

Kgongoane, accompanied by Pastor Alpheus Kgomo and the driver of the vehicle, Steve Hopane, arrived at the home of Debbie and her husband, Wally, in November.

All 15 contributors — Poppy and Nicky Mavrodaris, Theo van Bochove, Paddy Jeffrey, Joel Heller, Jill Levitas, Beg and Alec Linde, Marilyn Davies and Hleke and Emilly Nhlopo — were there to help with the loading of the boxes.

Debbie says all the boxes fitted beautifully on the back of the vehicle.

She describes Pastor Kgongoane as a charismatic and generous man.

“It is so nice to be part of a project that uplifts the community,” she adds.
