Get ready for Ride for Sight cycle race

Springs Wheelers has been part of the Dis-Chem Ride for Sight cycle event for 27 years and this year will be no different when the 28th event will take place at Boksburg City Stadium, corner Dudley Smith and Jubilee roads, Boksburg South on February 14.

The club has been part of Retina South Africa since the inception of the race in 1989 and is an integral part of the organising committee.

Rudi Bosch, from Springs Wheelers, says there are a few members who compete in the race, but most of the club members are involved in the organising committee.

To enter online go to www.cyclevents.co.za or www.cyclevents.co.za

Online entries close on February 1.

Claudette Medefindt, race director, says this cyclists enter this event as a practice race for the Cape Town Cycle Tour on March 6.

There is also a lucky draw and donation prizes worth over R200 000 to be won and the cash prizes, valued at R82 000, will be awarded in Cycling SA categories.

Adding a R20 donation to the entry fee will secure an automatic entry into the draw for a wonderful prize for two cyclists.

The prize is a bicycle valued at R40 000 or a seven night holiday for two in Zanzibar, valued at R42 000, flights excluded.

Free vision screening will be done by an optometrist on race day at the venue in partnership with the Ekurhuleni metro.

The metro, Springs Wheelers, Benoni Red Cross as well as an Hamnet Emergency Services partnered with Retina South Africa to provide the cyclists with the best emergency and on route support.

“These sponsors will ensure that the cyclists have a safe and enjoyable ride,” says Claudette.

All proceeds from the event will go to finding cures for retinal blindness and will fund genetic tests for financially disadvantaged children.

Over the last 27 years this event has raised more than R5-million for research into these blinding conditions.
