Springs policeman shot in Everest Informal Settlement

A Springs policeman was shot at three times in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Amanda Greybe, spokesman for the Springs police, says they received a call at 3.40am regarding a shooting taking place at the Everest Informal Settlement.

The constable and his partner waited for back-up at the Payneville intersection before going to the scene.

When back-up arrived, the policemen made their way to the address in question and found a victim in his home.

“The heavily bleeding victim sustained a head injury, however, it seems as though the bullet merely scraped the side of his head,” says Greybe.

The victim was rushed to hospital and a case of attempted murder was opened.

A community member, who was with the victim at the time, pointed out the suspect’s shack to the police.

While searching the shack, one of the officers overheard community members talking and heard that the suspect was allegedly hiding between the mattress and the base of the bed.

The officer approached the bed and the suspect fired three shots, wounding him in his left hand.

The suspect fled and was shot by the police.

The policeman was taken to hospital and another case of attempted murder was opened against the suspect.

It is unclear if the suspect is dead.
