EFC37, to be held at Carnival City on February 21 is only days away and Springs’ Tumisang Madiba is ready to rumble.

The Springs Rugby Club was a hive of activity from the early hours of February 1 when the Garbie 15km and 32km road races were hosted by the Springs Striders.

The Astro Outdoor Football facility in Bakerton held their fourth league game of the season on the evening of February 16.

The Springs Wheelers showed their commitment to helping the blind at the Dis-Chem Ride for Sight at the Boksburg Stadium on February 15.

Springsite Tumisang Madiba took to the EFC hexagon at Carnival City on February 21 in a fight which ended with the decision going to the judges.

Tommy Booth from Springs took part in the 2015 Dusi Canoe Marathon.

March 5

Although a few Gary Dickson Veteran Memorial Tournament matches were washed out, the finals will be played on March 7.

  • Golf day for young patient

A local physiotherapist hosted a golf day on February 27 for one of his patients.

March 12

The Springs East Rand Cranes rugby team played a hard game against Don’s Pawn Shop PE Police.

The finals of the Gary Dickson Senior Tournament saw Isabel Thurston and Gillian Perreira as the winners.

March 19

The season for the junior cricket at the Springs Old Boys cricket club came to an end with its annual prize giving held at the club.

The Springs Country Club held its club golf championships.

March 26

The Springs Multi Sports Arena in Bakerton hosted their first soccer tournament.

The u-12 Springs rugby team played against Nigel at the Springs Rugby Club in Geduld and won 34 – 28.

April 2

  • Friendly match

Springs Old Boys Soccer Club hosted a friendly match between the Springs Old Boys u-9 and Daveyton DC.

Pollak Park was abuzz with government officials playing golf in a friendly marketing golf game.

April 9

The Springs Country Club celebrated Easter with a four-day golf tournament.

Robyn Barrows is a champion, she took gold at the South African Archery Outdoor Championships in Johannesburg.

April 16

The second round of the Springs Country Club’s Super 16 tournament saw 96 players teeing off.

Sisters Rentia and Marinda Roetz represented Gauteng in the South African National All Style Karate Championships, held at Wits University.

April 23

The first team of the Springs Rugby Club played a tough game against Boksburg and won 31-19.

After the first attempt to climb Seweweekspoort failed, only two of the six former Springs Boys’ High School friends submitted it on May 2.

The K1 and K2 canoe championships were held at the Homestead Dam in Benoni where Tommy Booth placed second and third respectively.

Three local kickboxers brought back gold medals from the South African National Kickboxing Championships.

The Springs Stealers played their first baseball match of the season against Japan Express at the Boksburg Stadium.

Stefan Pretorius fought hard in his first professional EFC fight at Carnival City on June 6, but was forced to submit to a heel hook lock to prevent serious injury to his leg.

Students from Combat Zone Kickboxing Club competed in the Galaxy Kickboxing Challenge held at the Indoor Sports Centre in Kempton Park.

June 18

A junior sensei Ivan Marais (18) and five students from Combat Zone Kickboxing Club will represent SA in Ireland in November.

  • U-9 teams winners

The Springs Old Boys junior soccer teams won both their games in the Easterns Cup Games.

July 9

Easterns u-13 cricket team played against Easterns u-13 combined team and scored 393 runs for 10 wickets.

The Rio Grappling Club in Springs hosted a Pride Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition where around 70 participants from various other clubs participated.

July 16

  • Mighty challenge for Springs’ Tommy

Tommy Booth (32) is a recognized endurance paddler who on preparation for the 240km Berg River Canoe Marathon, completed the 21km East Rand Kayak training and both the 25km flat Watumi Vaal River and 40km Upper Klop races.

A new mixed martial arts and fitness club, Alien MMA and Fitness, opened its doors in the Tenchikan Dojo School of Martial Arts in Clydesdale Road, Casseldale.

July 23

The Springs Striders club and the public walked 1.46km in a circle in Geduld for 67 minutes in celebration of Mandela Day.

The Springs Stealers faced the South Stars at the Boksburg Stadium and showed great improvement. Francois McGregor, team captain, says South Stars is one of the top teams in the league and won the game 13-8.

  • Springs Old Boys’ final winners

The Springs Old Boys Bowling Club held three club finals where Cindy Hinrichsen won the ladies Hope championship.

July 30

Springs golfers proved that they were above par when they beat the Benoni Lake Club 4-0 in the Ekurhuleni Senior Handicap League played at the Springs Country Club.

August 6

The annual Springs Girls’ High School Auto Alphina 93.9 East Rand Stereo Challenge draws cyclists from all over the East Rand.Ā The event was held at Nigel Bottling Industries and was well attended.

Transvaal Galvanisers Mountain Bike Race for serious cyclists was held in Dalpark Extension One, Brakpan.Ā There was a 50km race for the more serious cyclists, a 35km race and a 10km race for fun and less advanced cyclists.

The quarter finals of the tennis league were held at the Selection Park Tennis Club. Matches due to take place on Saturday were postponed to Sunday due to the rain.

  • Metro doesn’t see the light

The high mast lights at the Springs Rugby Club have been a problem for the club for a long time.Ā Due into vandalism, some of the cables on one or two of the posts have been cut and some bulbs also need to be replaced.

September 17

Five Springs fitness fanatics competed in the national CrossFit Last Man Standing competition held in Pretoria. Head coach of the club Dylan Viljoen (21) says the three days were worth every minute.

September 24

During the FightStars 14 amateur competition fighters from the House of Tinkerbell Kickboxing fought their hearts out. “Win or lose, we are proud. the champs showcased heart and skill,” says coach JP Kruger.

October 8

Logan Stoltz (11) is currently ranked the 30th u-12 player by Tennis South Africa Future stars live up to their name: The u-15 and u-17 teams from the Springs Future Stars soccer teams defeated their opponents from Springs All Stars soccer teams.

Springsite Stefan “Mr Kick” Pretorius (22), from the Rio Grappling Club in Springs, fought in his second professional mixed martial arts fight against Wade “The Sadist” Sage. Stefan beat his opponent two minutes and 30 seconds into the first round by a technical kockout (TKO).

Springs resident Tommy Booth took on the technically challenging Loweveld Crocodile River during the recent N4 Trac Lowveld Crocodile K1 River Race.

October 15

Ringbalspelers van die Ekurhuleni-Oos Ringbalspan het besonder goed gevaar by die Nasionale Ringbal Kampioenskappe in Margate.Ā Welgedacht Ringbal Klub spot met 23 spelers wat hul SA kleure ontvang het.

Fernando Booysen (12) skrik beslis vir been stoeimat nie en het die onlangs met die louere bybdie twee-dag Suid-Afrikaanse Jeug Grieks Romeinse o-13 kampioenskappe in Kaapstad weggestap.

Byron Smit (10) Blackfin Swimming Club’s youngest swimmer completed the 1 500m race at the Dis-Chem Sun City challenge in 28 minutes and nine seconds.

The Springs Old Boys Colts cricket team beat the Avian team from Kempton Park with nine wickets.

November 5

  • Striders Athletic Club host Barbie rally

The Striders Athletic Club hosted the Barbie Corporate Road Relay 2015 where 40 walking teams entered and 26 running teams took part in the 5km relays.

Springs business owner Graeme van Breda (43) is the 2015 Red Square ZX-10 Cup champion.

November 12

  • Klub deel pryse uit

The Springs Old Boys Cricket Club Colts (SOB) team challenged Wattville in a league match at the club.Ā They bowled Wattville out for 38 runs.

The Smurfland golf team won the final team competition with 196 points at the Springs Country Club.

  • ‘Fowl’ play at Springs Old Boys

Springs Old Boys Bowling Club hosted its annual Chicken Fun Day on Sunday.Club members donate the prizes – eggs and frozen chickens.

December 3

Kancho Kenji Nakawaza from Japan, visited Springs for the second five day International Aiki-Sambo seminar held at the Alien MMA Club and the Municipal Bowling Club in Geduld.

  • Win for Directors

The Springs Old Boys Directors cricket team faced Etwatwa at Springs Old Boys and managed to beat the Benoni team by 127 runs.

  • Masters show their golfing skills

Many men and women took part in the Masters Competition held at the Pollak Park Golf Club.

December 10

The Springs Striders Christmas Charity Run took place at the Springs Rugby Club.

The 30 athletes left the club at 7am, running to the Springs SPCA to donate dog and cat food.

Cedric “The Dominator” Doyle (31) plans to dominate the hexagon when he fights at EFC46 at Carnival City.

Pollak Park Golf Club is undergoing a makeover to help the club grow. Rachel Howard is the first Professional Golfer’s Association woman in the East Rand to run a ProShop.
