Widow murdered on Endicott farm

A 66-year-old widow, Irene Vermaak, was found murdered on her farm in Endicott on Tuesday evening.

According to police, her hands were tied and her throat had been cut with a sharp object.

WO Tommy Tomlinson, Springs Cluster spokesman, says Vermaak had lived on her own for the past nine years.

Police believe she was killed between 5pm and 7pm on Tuesday.

Tomlinson says neighbours became concerned when they were unable to get hold of Vermaak.

A neighbouring farmer went to Vermaak’s house to investigate and found her in a pool of blood in her bedroom.

Tomlinson says police are yet to determine whether anything was taken from the house.

The forensic department worked throughout the night to collect evidence.

Tomlinson says they are not sure how many suspects were involved, but a case of murder was opened at the Devon Police Station, Mpumalanga.

Since the farm is on the border of the two provinces, the case was lodged at the Devon Police Station.
