‘Bloody’ sewage spews from manhole

A manhole in front of the municipal offices in Fifth Avenue was overflowing with what looked like a mixture of sewage and blood this morning (Tuesday).

The strong overflow had motorists driving in a flood of excrement, resulting in their vehicles being splashed with muck.

Some residents claim that the blood stems from the abattoir in Oranjehof.

Dirk Groenewald, managing director of the abattoir, says if the drain is blocked on that side, it can hardly be their fault.

“We are an active factory, of course there will be water flowing down the drain along with a little blood,” he says.

Groenewald states that they comply with the specifications that certain particles are allowed to flow down the drain such as diluted blood.

In a previous interview with Groenewald, he stated that the abattoir has taken measures to prevent waste from overflowing from the drain into the street.

“We have fat-traps and many sieves in our drains to stop the waste flowing into the sewer and causing a blockage,” he said.

Groenewald explains they cannot do anything about blockages further down the sewer line, as this is also caused by other sources in the area.

The overflowing sewage was fixed two hours later, but the stench lingered.

The Addie is awaiting comment from the Ekurhuleni Metro.
