‘Springs Monster’ still in Weskoppies Hospital

The ''Springs Monster'' case was due to start in the Pretoria High Court yesterday (Tuesday), but was postponed to December 4.

The accused was referred to the Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital on October 5, for three days’ mental evaluation, but he is still in the hospital and the case was postponed in his absence.

The father of five and his wife are facing 18 charges, including child abuse, the alleged attempted murder of their 11-year-old son, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, defeating the ends of justice and attempted murder and rape.

Springs police arrested the man in May, last year, after his 11-year-old son escaped and sought help from the neighbours.

During the arrest the police came across the couple’s five children, aged between one and 16 years of age at the time, who were kept locked up in their Springs house for a number of years.

The man was denied bail and remains in custody at the Modderbee Prison.

His wife was arrested a month after he was and her bail has been extended until the couple’s next appearance.

Their trial will start on December 4.
