Church congregation robbed at gunpoint

A church in Marie Street, New State Areas, was targeted by four armed robbers on Wednesday.

While the minister was delivering a sermon, three men and a woman, all armed with guns, entered the church building at 7.55pm.

The robbers threatened to shoot the congregation if they didn’t hand over their cellphones and jewellery.

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says one of the robbers pointed a gun at the minister and ordered him to hand over the money collected during the service.

The robbers took money, cellphones and jewellery, and fled in the minister’s vehicle, a Fiat Palio.

Ramphora says the vehicle was found abandoned in Springs later that evening.

One shot was fired but no one was injured.

“Not even people in church are safe,” says Ramphora.
