Ebotse murder accused awaits verdict

The verdict in the case against murder accused Retief Liebenberg (50) will be heard in the Pretoria High Court on November 19.

Liebenberg, a Springs businessman, was arrested on October 31, 2013, at his Benoni home in connection with the shooting of 19-year-old Dewald “Poenie” Visser and his father Dewald Visser (46).

The case started in the Pretoria High Court last Monday where Liebenberg pleaded not guilty to the two charges of murder.

The case continued throughout the week with both the state and defence arguing their case.

Judge Mahomed Ismail postponed the case to prepare his verdict.

Liebenberg was called to the stand to testify on Thursday.

The state called his psychologist and a ballistic expert to the stand to testify.

His wife, brother and daughter were called to testify on Tuesday

Among the state’s witnesses was a pathologist who testified on the bullet wounds found on the bodies.

His testimony was followed by that of the first police officer on the scene.

The state also called the security guard at the Ebotse Estate in Rynfield, Benoni, who testified on Wednesday to the events of the evening on which Visser and his son were killed.

When contacted by the Addie, Liebenberg said his faith in God and his prayers keep him going.

“I was very emotional during the hearing and still am,” he added.

When asked about the possible outcome of the case, Prosector Phyllis Vorster said the state cannot speculate on the outcome of the judge’s decision.

However, if he is found guilty, South African law dictates a minimum sentence of 15 years for murder.
