Put an end to dogfighting

Many of the animals have to be euthanised.

Dogfighting has become a major problem in many communities around the world.

This is a cruel and brutal ‘sport’ some people enjoy while watching the dogs tear each other apart.

Liezel Kruger from the Springs SPCA says the law states that dogfighting is illegal.

“The Animal Protection Act clearly states that any person involved can be charged with animal cruelty, whether you are just a spectator, owner of the property where the activity is taking place or in charge of the dogfighting ring,” she says.

The SPCA urges the community to contact the police immediately when they suspect any dogfighting activity.

“The police usually go to the scene if they are contacted and sometimes request that we go along to remove the animals,” says Kruger.

She explains that if they are contacted, they will follow up and do inspections of the property, but will inform the police first-hand.

“Sadly, many of the animals we remove have to be euthanised as they are fighting dogs,” says Kruger.

Depending on the dog’s temperament, the SPCA will decide after scrutinising the animal thoroughly, whether it has to be euthanised or can be placed into a new home.

“They have been trained to be fighting dogs and one may never be able to get that instinct out of them, that’s why they can’t usually be placed in a new home and have to be euthanised,” Kruger concludes.

Amanda Stander commented on the Addie’s Facebook page saying: “Dogs are meant to be loved, not to make money and not for guarding unless they are in the professional field.

“They are companions and friends.”

Capt Johannes Ramphora, spokesman for the Springs police, says they immediately open a case of animal cruelty against the owner of the dog or the person who is in possession of the animal.

“Dogfighting is illegal and we do not condone it at all,” he says.

He adds that they immediately go to the scene where the suspected dogfighting is taking place, where they then phone the SPCA to inspect the animals for any injuries.

“This is animal cruelty and you will be arrested,” he warns.
