Graeme races to the finish

Springs business owner Graeme van Breda (43) is the 2015 Red Square ZX-10 Cup champion.

The Kawasaki ZX-10 Masters Cup is a national challenge series created for riders who are 35 years and older.

Races are mostly held on Saturdays at various circuits around the country.

All riders are on identical machinery and tyres, and the engines are all dyno tested and sealed by the factory upon arrival in South Africa .

The motorcycle engines push between 175 and 185 horsepower.

The championship consists of 10 rounds at different circuits around SA, from Zwartkops all the way to Killarney in Cape Town.

Graeme says there are two heats at every race where the winner gets 25 points and second place gets 20 points.

“The rider with the highest points wins the series,” he says.

Graeme’s number 41 Kawasaki ZX-10R bike is prepared at Van Breda Motorcycles where the suspension and race tuning is done by his father Les van Breda (66), who is also a multiple SA champion.

Racing is obviously in Graeme‘s blood, as a broken pelvis in a crash five years ago could not keep him from riding a motorcycle.

He returned to racing two years ago, placing second overall in 2014 and winning the championship this year.

There is one round of the championship left to be held on Saturday at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria, but Graeme has managed to seal the title thanks to an overall win at Killarney two weeks ago.

Graeme says motorcycle enthusiasts can be assured of a great day’s racing at the final showdown.
