Policeman shot and wounded in gunfight with robbery suspects

Springs police arrested five suspects for attempted murder following a shoot-out in Paynville on Monday.

Police had been called out to an address along Huddlestone Road after a man and his wife were robbed in their home.

According to police, the couple was asleep in their bedroom when they were awakened at about 1am by a noise in the kitchen.

Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, says the couple then heard a knock on their bedroom door and a man’s voice.

The man said he was a policeman.

Before the couple could react, the bedroom door was kicked open and four armed suspects, wearing balaclavas, entered the bedroom.

A fifth suspect is believed to have been in the house, but did not enter the bedroom.

The four suspects demanded money and one of them assaulted the man with an iron rod.

The suspects searched the room, took R11 000 in cash, three cellphones and a tablet, and ran away.

Police were called to the house and while officers were taking the victims’ statements, they heard gunshots.

Ramphora says the officers called for backup and went to investigate.

Police found themselves in a confrontation with the house robbery suspects and a shoot-out ensued.

A policeman was shot in his hand and shoulder during the gunfight and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The five suspects were arrested.

The men, aged between 19 and 25, face charges of house robbery and attempted murder.
