Voluntary surrender of gun lands man in hot water

Springs SAPS arrested a man on Tuesday after he tried to surrender an unlicensed firearm to police.

The 46-year-old man visited the Springs Police Station at about noon to hand in the firearm, which he claimed belonged to him.

After police checked their register, however, they discovered the firearm wasn’t registered in the man’s name.

According to Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, they asked the man from where he acquired the firearm and to whom it belonged, but the man refused to divulge any details.

Upon further investigation, police discovered the man had recently applied for a firearm licence, but his application was declined.

“Without any proof of ownership or explanation on how he obtained the firearm, we had to arrest him for possession of an unlicensed firearm,” says Ramphora.

The man will appear in court soon.
